Government Oppression

The Hunger Games is primarily designed to oppress and control the districts in Panem.  What other forms of the Capitol's control do the people in District 12 experience?

  3. The capitol’s control over the district 12 is not that good they are not allowed to leave out side of the fences. Only get a certain amount of food and it is not enough food to survive because people die from starvation ever day but the capitol says it’s from disease. If you get cough talking bad about the capitol you will get your tongue cut out so you won’t be able to talk bad about the capitol.

  4. they control the people in District 12 by making a fence around the whole entire place and make it electrified for three hours a day. If you leave and they catch you they will do a public execution or life in prison.

  5. the capitols control makes district 12 were they cant leave theres an electric fence traping them inside their district and they only get a certain amount of food but its not enough to survive and to make sure the districts dont try to rise up against the capitol the will obliterate them like district 13

  8. The government of Panem oppresses many things for the districts. Things like controlling how much food each district gets, what jobs are allowed in each district, and how far they can travel between each district. Each district has different priorities; district 12 is a coal mining district. If they do not do these the coal miner jobs they will be punished. Added to the punishment, each district has an electrical fence around it, this controls who goes out of the district which is basically know one. Many people in district 12 are starving. To get food in the district you have to be able to buy/trade for food. Not many can afford to buy food for their family, Katniss for example; she breaks a law in her district to help her family survive. If she gets caught outside of her district she could be publicly executed. Katniss knows that her family could be punished but everyone in the district is in on the “black market” so no one will tell.

The government controls all of the food they can have a month. They also control how much electricity they can have a day. In our society we have freedom of speech to talk about our president whenever we want but in the hunger games you are not allowed to talk about the capital in a bad way or you could get in trouble.

  10. The government of panem can control anyone and everyone in the following other ways. Well for starters, you can’t leave the district unless it’s a government job. Also the government controls how much food you can eat and if you want more food you have to take out tesserae and get entered in the reaping more.

  11. The food shortage in District 12 is major causes of the high death toll, if you want to survive you better have money, or you have enough courage to sneak under the fence into the open wilderness and hunt. Beyond this fence are the dangers of wild animals that wouldn’t think twice about you being there next meal. The electricity in District 12 is very limited, usually only receiving 3 to 4 hours a day of electricity can be hard on someone who has to go out and hunt for food and be back in time to cook it.

  13. One way that the government controls District 12 is that the all put their names in a drawing, separated by the boys and girls then they draw a name out and whoever is drawn out that have a choice to play or not. If you choose to play then you become a tribute to the game. There is a fence around the whole play where they can’t get out and if they try to escape then it will be very painful.

  14. District 12 is controlled by the capitol they can only have certain amount of food, and by putting fear in the district. The same with all the other districts, the people in the districts can’t travel from district to district, they also experience the games and the video footage of district 13 as a reminder that if you rebel, then this will happen to you.

  15. The capitol pretty much controls everything except for them breathing. They may even control that. They control everything by striking fear into their hearts. Hunger games are a form of cruel and unusual punishment, and is not in our country today. I gust think that Panem is cruel country.

  16. Other forms of capitol control over district 12 are the fence that is made to keep the people in and to keep the other districts out. But katniss she goes beyond the fence to hunt because the capitol rations how much food you can buy and they make it illegal to hunt so no one can get any more food. They do these things to show how strong they are and so the districts can’t rebel.

  18. The people in district 12 are being controlled by the capitol in many different ways, such as the amount of food they can eat. Also, they live in a fence where they can’t leave and go anywhere and they cannot communicate with other districts this is awful because no one should be treated like their some kind of animal, I would feel like I am trapped. The capitol also controls the things they watch on TV, like they watch the reaping and anything about the government, but anything else they cannot watch. To sum it up district 12 cannot make their own decisions on how they would want to live or do things; it’s just what the capital wants.

  19. They are being control by the government in different ways such as where you go, what you do, who you serve, made to be in the competition. Theres many ways you also have to watch the reaping in the games if you are not in it yourself.

  20. The capitol controls allot of things in Panem such as how much food and money they are allowed to have. They also control where they are allowed to go and what goes in and out of there district. These people have no right to make any of their own decisions they can’t even watch TV that is not controlled by the government

  21. The government of Panem controls basically everything, such as food, electricity, how far they can travel. An if they get caught talking bad about the capitol they get executed. Each district has their own thing that symbols them. Example, district 12 is all about coal mining, but if that job is not done then there’s another punishment. District 12 is surrounded by electrical fences and if any one got caught trying to pass they would be a punishment of death and or that whole persons family would be punished. All the citizens are limited with food supplies, and with only 2 or something hours of electricity its probably hard to keep cool/warm and someone would have to go out and hunt for the family to survive.

  22. Some other forms of the Capitol’s control that people in District 12 experience is that the amount of food that the Capitol gives the district. The Capitol is so controlling they even control when the Districts watch TV. Even when they make them watch TV it is to watch the reaping or pictures of district 13 from when the Capitol bombed district 13. The capitol also makes sure that no one leaves Panem or their district. At district 12 they keep them fenced in. So that no one leaves. The fence is supposed to be electric but it is only electric for a few hours in the day.
