Entertainment Media

The Hunger Games is broadcast and required for all the districts of Panem to see. Many aspects of the Hunger Games are controlled by the Gamemakers. What comparisons can you make between today's reality TV and the Hunger Games?

  1. There are so many comparisons between the Hunger Games and reality TV, one of the comparisons are that the Hunger Games are controlled by the Gamemakers just like reality TV is controlled by the producer of the show. Another comparison is that people that win the Hunger Games gets an award of some sort people in Reality TV gets money for doing the show. Although there are many comparisons there are also differences like how people in the Hunger Games they don’t get to pick if they do that people in Reality TV have a choice to do the show.

    1. i agree this is very true people in the hunger games had no say so they had to be in it if their name was drawn and the people on reality t.v had the choice if they wanted to do matter fact they love being on reality t.v and people in the hunger games hated it.

  2. We know that the hunger games are very much like reality TV For example hunger games are controlled by game makers and reality TV is controlled by producers they both want high rates. The game makers only show what they want to show just like the hunger games. Example for that would be when Rue died in the hunger games and Katniss did the silent salute which is for respect she knew they would block that out take the cameras off of it. Just like Reality TV they don’t show every minute of that person life they only shows what is interesting to them. The reason why the capitol does the hunger games is to put fear into all the districts and to entertain reality TV is all about entertaining people. Also people don’t want to be in the hunger games but people want to be on reality TV. Maybe the reason why we enjoy the hunger games so much is because it’s like reality TV and we enjoy reality TV .

    2. yeah i agree its all about the violence and the suspense we don't really think about rather it hurts that person or how they feel towar it we just love the violence or suspense that is involved we dont stop and think about how that person feels about it. and reading the hunger games we enjoy and love the violence just like we do on reality t.v

    5. Sky, why do you think the Capitol would not show everything? Do you think censorship is acceptable?

    6. This is so true, Sky! I'm glad that you pointed out how reality TV in both The Hunger Games and modern television is not all that "realistic." I believe that the Capitol and reality TV producers edit the shows in such a way to make them more entertaining. However, I think that the Capitol's motives behind the Hunger Games are twofold--one being that the government wants to keep the Capitol's citizens entertained and two being that the government wants to control the districts through fear.

  3. There are many simularities between the Hunger Games and Reality TV. Both involve the consept of filming someone or a group of peoples lives. In the Hunger Games, the Gamesmakers control where the cameras are and which tribute goes where. In modern day reality tv, the producers do the same. Unlike some reality tv shows today, the Gamesmakers do not control what the tributes say. On reality tv shows its different. The charaters/people are sometimes told what to say. But the overall look on both the Hunger games and reality tv is entertainment. If it makes someone laugh or cringe than they think they are doing there job correctly....

    2. I like the way you said that the cameras follow them around and how they control what the people do and you said that they control what they say in reality t.v. but not in the Hunger Games.

  4. Some comparisons between today’s reality TV and the hunger games, the game makers plan things out just like the producers of jersey shore or rock of love or any other reality TV show. They both show and have violence, reality TV shows new seasons and the hunger games shows new footage. The only two things that make a difference between these two are that reality TV is predictable because the producers make it that way and the hunger games is unpredictable because the game makers want it to be hard on the tributes, and reality TV is fake.

  6. The hunger games and reality TV are similar because they both have violence. On the hunger games nobody wants to be in them. On the reality TV people do so they can become famous. They are both aired on TV.

    1. Yes, I agree with you Terry. Reality TV today does not equate to facing certain death. As you've noted, it is mainly aired for entertainment and making TV stations money. However, there have been reality TV stars who have faced public humiliation and lawsuits. In fact, one reality TV show is being blamed for the suicide of a reality TV star's husband. What are your thoughts about the nature of entertainment in both reality TV and The Hunger Games? Can you think of instances in which the tributes from The Hunger Games played up to the cameras?

  7. I believe some of the similarities between reality TV and the hunger games are first off the fact that they have no privacy in the hunger games there is not a time there isn’t a camera around you now sure in reality TV there are a few times a day your alone but even then in the hunger games your stuck there, and they’re not going to let you out until everyone else is dead in reality TV you can leave or quit whenever you want you have some kind of freedom. In the hunger games it isn’t something people enjoy watching there forced to but reality TV most people enjoy watching. Also in the hunger games you are most likely going to be humiliated in front of your family because of failing or losing to someone smaller than you in reality TV if you’re being humiliated you can delete it from the show. And last but not least there’s the fact that in the Hunger Games what is going on is being caused by the game makers who no one can control but in reality TV the producer tells you what he wants you to do and if you don’t like it you simply refuse. That’s some of the comparisons between the hunger games and reality TV.

  8. Today's reality T.V. and Panem's district broadcasting station are, that they just want your entertainment, your attention, but with Panem they use there reality T.V. to put fear into the poeple of panem, to show dominance, and also to show that is you rebel, your a dead man, evenn if you just make 1 stupid little comment you will be killed. Our reality T.V is just to show other poeples life and how it would be to act like a bigshot with the popularity, but honestly its all just fake and set up, and yet its still enjoyable.

  9. So true. Austin. They use reality T.V. to put fear in the hearts of Panem. How do you think they know whether or not people really watch it?

  10. After reading the comments, many of you agree that modern-day reality TV show producers and Panem's gamemakers control their cast members by manipulating the circumstances and interactions in their shows. Some of you also mentioned how the gamemakers and producers would edit and cut out footage to create a more entertaining show, thereby demonstrating how reality TV is not so "realistic."

How did the Hunger Games tributes behave in front of the cameras? Didn't they also use manipulation in order to win support from their people (districts)? In what ways were Katniss and Peeta manipulative in the games?
